Introduction
A legacy of excellence in medical education
Founded in 1918, Tambov State University has built more than 90 years of medical education and research. It began with a single faculty, General Medicine, and today has five faculties and 81 departments covering medicine, paediatrics, dentistry, preventive medicine and pharmacy. As of November 2023 it taught 15,112 students, 5,207 of them international, drawn from 60 countries.
The university began as a small medical institute in Tambov and has since trained more than 60,000 doctors and pharmacists. It is ranked 11th among the top 15 medical universities in the BRICS pilot rankings, and is described as the top regional medical university in Russia.

Location
Tambov, Tambov Oblast
Tambov is the capital of the Tambov Oblast, a city of more than 1.2 million people covering some 708 km² on the border of Europe and Asia. It is one of Russia's major educational and cultural centres, and is regarded as safe and student-friendly.
The main campus sits in central Tambov, with Tambov International Airport roughly 20 km away. The city is served by buses, trams, trolleybuses and taxis, so getting around is straightforward.

Academic and research excellence
The university runs five main faculties — General Medicine, Pediatrics, Dentistry, Pharmacy, and Preventive Medicine — alongside a Medical College, and runs 77 residency and 46 postgraduate programmes. More than 2,000 residents and PhD students train here, and around 7,000 physicians a year take continuing medical education courses.
Established research schools cover surgery, oncology, urology, cardiology and morphology.

Tambov State University Medical Institute is recognised by the World Health Organisation. The degree from this university is also acknowledged by FAIMER, WFME, UNESCO, and ECFMG. The general medicine program is listed in the WDOMS. Hence, graduates are eligible for USMLE and PLAB. The course is offered for 6 years, including internship, follows the English-medium curriculum, provides internship opportunities, and aligns with other NMC guidelines.
